OCTOBER 2011CALL TO RENEWUBCM Endorses Heritage BCThe Union of BC Municipalities passed a resolution at its recent annual convention in support of Heritage BC and the “Call to Renew” British Columbia’s heritage program. The resolution was proposed by the City of Kelowna and endorsed by the Southern Interior Local Government Association. Many other municipal and regional governments and regional associations had passed similar resolutions and forwarded them to the UBCM in the months leading up to the fall convention.
The UBCM routinely considers a number of resolutions on issues of concern to local government, many of them dealing with the province. Under the province’s own policy, it is local governments that carry the greatest responsibility where heritage conservation is concerned, so their views on the “Call to Renew” campaign are paramount. It remains to be seen how the provincial government will respond. Read the full resolution:

STRATEGIC PLANMinister Promises $35,000 for
Heritage BCAt the Heritage BC Annual Conference in Burnaby on September 30, the Honourable Steve Thomson, minister responsible for heritage conservation, announced that a financial contribution of $35,000 will be made to Heritage BC over the next six months. The funds are to assist Heritage BC develop a new strategic plan.
Until 2009, the provincial government had provided annual operating funding for Heritage BC. That support was terminated two years ago and has remained a point of considerable friction while Heritage BC continues to struggle to stay afloat. The new funds are most welcome, but are understood not to be the government’s final answer to Heritage BC as far as the funding question is concerned. HERITAGE BC CONFERENCE & AWARDSNew Board of DirectorsHeritage BC welcomes our new board members elected at the Annual General Meeting on September 30. Helen Cain is a planner with the City of Victoria and divides her time between heritage and other files. Bjorn Simonsen, Victoria, is a former provincial archaeologist and retired heritage consultant who has been a Heritage BC director previously. Don Luxton is the principal of Donald Luxton and Associates in Vancouver and is a well-known heritage consultant, author and heritage advocate. Directors Eric Pattison of New Westminster and Shirley Gratton of Prince George were also returned to the board. Eric, an architect based in New Westminster, was appointed the board President immediately following the AGM. Info Session: Heritage LighthousesA one-hour information session on preserving heritage lighthouses will be held at noon, Saturday October 15 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria in connection with the International National Trust Organization conference. There is no charge and you do not have to be registered for the conference to participate.
