Awards Program Revised

A number of changes have been made to the Heritage BC Awards Program to make it more effective and up to date with current technology.

The number of nominations that may be submitted by any single nominator in a given year is now limited to two. Previously there had been no limit. Award categories have also been revised, including the addition of heritage planning and management.

The annual awards deadline is March 1.  Find out more about how to make your online nominations.

HERITAGE WEEK : FEBRUARY 21-27 2011

Poster to Feature Historic Bridge

Honouring the centennial of B.C. Parks, the theme for Heritage Week 2011 is “A Century of Conservation: Parks and Cultural Landscapes”. Our parks are not just places of unspoiled wilderness. Many are also noted for their historic landmarks, or have great cultural significance.

Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park in the Fraser Canyon is one of these. While the 1926 suspension bridge no longer carries traffic, it is preserved as a monument to engineering ingenuity, marking the spot where an earlier crossing first leaped the Fraser River, forming a crucial link in the historic Wagon Road to the fabled gold fields of the Cariboo a century and a half ago. Below, the fast- flowing waters in the narrow canyon testify to a much more ancient tradition, where First Nations have caught and dried fish for millennia.

EDUCATION

HBC Supports New 'Old School' Courses

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s award-winning Old School is a unique educational program which offers certification and Professional Development Credits. Courses are open to all.

The VHF is still adding new courses to fill out the curriculum. While established courses pay their own way, the cost of developing new ones can’t be recovered through registration fees alone. This year B.C. has provided grants of $2,000 to each of two new courses being offered for the first time. “Masonry and Foundations” on May 18 and “Old Building Interiors” on October 30.

Having the knowledge and appropriate skills is essential for sound heritage conservation, whether you are a professional, home owner, or an enthusiastic volunteer. Good learning opportunities are hard to come by, and Heritage BC is pleased to support the continuing growth 'Old School'.

NEW WESTMINSTER: NOVEMBER 27

Community Heritage Commissions Conference

The third annual Community Heritage Commissions (CHCs) conference will be held in New Westminster on Saturday, November 27. The New Westminster CHC is the host and Heritage BC is a funding sponsor.

CHCs are an integral part of community-based heritage conservation. Appointed by municipal council, these advisory bodies also frequently undertake special projects and initiatives.

There seems to be a renewed desire for an opportunity to network and share ideas. Watch for more info in the next few weeks!
